Competition, improvement and the continuing rhythm of club life.
September has arrived at West Essex with little sense that the golfing season is slowing down.
The closing weeks of summer produced another busy programme of competition, with the Bank Holiday Texas Scramble bringing 100 golfers together and a succession of medals, Stablefords and club matches filling the calendar. It is the sort of activity that says rather more about a golf club than any membership brochure could: golfers competing seriously, enjoying one another’s company and returning week after week to be part of club life.
That competitive spirit will be particularly evident this month as West Essex hosts Essex Finals Day on Sunday 13 September. Welcoming county golf to the club is both a privilege and a reminder of the standing of the course, while members will once again play their part in helping the day run smoothly.
A Club That Continues to Invest
Away from competition, this is also an important period of progress around the club.
The next stage of the wider rebuild is beginning, with demolition work now under way and the existing structure being taken back to slab level ahead of further investigation and the next phase of planning.
At the same time, work continues on the course itself. The ongoing Course Project and the club’s discussions with Michael Pinner reflect a longer-term ambition to keep improving the golfing experience at West Essex.
That commitment extends beyond the course.
For members who want to work on their games, the TrackMan Range has become an important part of everyday golf at the club. Detailed ball-flight information gives players the opportunity to make practice more purposeful, while the putting green, short-game areas and bunkers allow every part of the game to be worked on away from the course.
For some, that means an hour of focused practice. For others it is a few balls before a round, a lesson with one of the club’s PGA professionals or simply another reason to spend time at the club.
It is all part of what membership should provide: not simply access to eighteen holes, but the opportunity to play, practise, compete and improve.
Different Ways Into the Game
One of the most encouraging developments at West Essex continues to be the number of different routes through which people can become part of the club.
Experienced golfers will naturally be drawn to the challenge of the James Braid course and a strong programme of competitions. But the club is equally conscious that golf must remain welcoming to those who are still discovering the game.
The Women’s Golf Academy is an important part of that approach.
Designed to introduce women to golf in a relaxed and supportive environment, the programme combines group coaching with use of the TrackMan Range and the club’s wider practice facilities. As confidence develops, there are opportunities to progress onto the course, meet other golfers and become part of the women’s section.
It is a gradual introduction to both the game and the club itself — and precisely the sort of pathway that can turn an initial interest in golf into something considerably more enduring.
Golf on the Edge of London
West Essex has always occupied an unusual position.
Set against Epping Forest but within easy reach of Chingford and North and East London, the club offers the space and character of a traditional members’ golf club without requiring golfers to travel far beyond the capital.
A challenging parkland course, modern practice facilities, an increasingly diverse membership and a full competitive and social calendar make West Essex a place where golf can become part of the week rather than an occasional excursion.
September is another illustration of that.
There is county golf arriving at the club, members competing throughout the month, continued investment in the course and facilities, and new golfers beginning their own journey into the game.
The season may be moving on, but at West Essex there remains a great deal still to come.
