For the first time, West Essex Golf Club is hosting The McGregor Trophy for 2024. The junior event will take place between the 16th and the 18th of July. It is expected that entrants will feature from over 35 countries around the world in The McGregor Trophy, one of the biggest junior competitions in the United Kingdom.

What is The McGregor Trophy?

The McGregor Trophy is a junior golf tournament for competitors aged 16 or under. It was founded in 1982 by Roy Chase at Radcliffe-on-Trent Golf Club and the trophy was named after Kate and Matt McGregor, former captains of the club who donated the trophy.

What is the Format of the Tournament?

The championship welcomes golfers of all nationalities who meet the following criteria:

  • Possess a playing handicap not exceeding 4.4
  • Are under 16 years of age as of January 1 of the event year

The tournament is played in Stroke Play of 72 holes over three days. Each day is broken down as:

  • First Two Days: 18 holes each day.
  • Final Day: After 36 holes, the leading 40 competitors and those tying for 40th place will play an additional 36 holes.

Previous Winners

There have been 41 winners since the tournament was founded in 1982, with only 2020 not featuring a tournament due to the pandemic. 

West Essex alumni Oliver Fisher won back in 2004 and by 2006 he won a European Tour card to become the youngest Briton to win a tour card.

Other notable winners include:

  • Jim Payne, who won it twice in 1986 and 1987 then went on to win two tournaments on the European Tour.
  • Steve Webster, won it in 1992 and went on to win two tournaments on the European Tour.
  • Graeme Storm won it in 1994 and went on to win four tournaments on the European and Challenge Tours.
  • Justin Rose won the McGregor Trophy in 1995 going on to have a stellar career including winning the U.S. Open in 2013.
  • Rasmus Højgaard won it in 2016 and has already won four tournaments on the European Tour.
