New Editor Alert: some opening words

Hello, and welcome to a new era of the West Essex Newsletter. Without disrespecting my predecessor too directly, I wish to rejuvenate and revamp this weekly roundup in a succinct yet informative way. Some of you may know me, some of you may not, but feel free to bombard me with queries and suggestions if you see me up at the club which I frequent more or less on a daily basis. As a student on summer break, I don’t have much else to do with my time than to get frustrated on the golf course.

Some of you have already approached me about me taking over from our beloved Chairman, in order for him to focus on more practical and corporate dealings that are way above my threshold. The Newsletter should, I hope, embellish and spotlight all of the key events going on at the club. Whilst upholding long-standing templates, I hope this new age will indulge in a more rounded and communal approach, celebrating our great golf club.

But, at the end of the day, it is just a newsletter. So, for those of you who actually read your emails, here is my first, and hopefully not last, rendition of the West Newsletter. Enjoy!

Club Champs this weekend

This Saturday, the 15th June (2024) is the Club Championships, where 36 holes of scratch medal competition will determine this year’s club champion. The best net score will win the Herbert Chappell Bowl. It promises to be a great day, despite the potential looming weather forecast. The course will be playing its hardest, with back tees and tucked pins, in order to crown a truly deserving champion. Tee times will be released by Wednesday evening for those who are playing. Play well all and may the best man win!

Guest Day: Sunday 9th June

Last Sunday was our Guest Day with over 30 non-members coming to play the beautiful West. It was a fourball better ball format with a sublime winning score of 46 points. As well as prizes for nearest the pin and longest drive. It was a great day hosted by our captain Ben, with all of the staff doing an exceptional job as always. The weather was favourable and everyone had a good time and spoke about how much they enjoyed the course.

St. James Pro-Am Qualifier Results

The St James Pro-Am Qualifier (Stableford) took place on Saturday 8th June 2024 with 82 entrants. Jack Cornhill (9) won with 40 points beating both Lee Barrington (3) and Chris C Johnson (9) on Countback. Jack and Lee both had 22 points on the back nine, both had 15 points on the back six but Jack had an extra one point on the back three.

Jack wins entry into the pro-am, the jacket and a pro-shop voucher for £70. Lee wins the jumper and a pro-shop voucher for £35; Chris receives the Polo and a pro-shop voucher for £17.50. John Moncur wins a Polo for nearest the pin on the 7th and James Attfield a Polo for the longest drive on the 13th (320+ yards!). There were 13 verified twos and a hole-in-one on the 5th for Colin White. Each two has received a card top-up of £5.50 and £11 for the ace.

Youth Shield Action

The youth shield team have been busy over the last few weeks. They have had two matches, unfortunately both resulting in losses but against much older and more experienced players. Providing more valuable experience for our team to build on. They lost away at Romford 4-1 and most recently at home against Canons Brook. They have one more match in the league. This is on Saturday 22 June against Langdon Hills at home. The top two teams from each group will progress to the quarterfinals. Let’s wish them luck in their final match!

Our Young Prodigy

Our very own Oscar made his debut for Essex recently at Gosfield Lakes. He won his match on the last 1 up. What a great achievement for him! Big things to come from the 8-year-old who has already astonished a few low handicappers at the club with his talent. Well done Oscar!

Pro Shop Product of the week

The product of the week in the Pro Shop is these brand new alignment feature Bridgestone balls designed by Jason Day. Get yourself either a sleeve for £12 or a box for £45. They will be used by the Aussie at Pinehurst for the U.S. Open this week, and serve as an aid for lining up putts on the green, without having to draw lines on your balls with sharpies.

Hole in One Alert!

Colin White recorded his first ever ace on the 5th hole on Saturday! St. James’s Place were sponsoring a hole in one prize worth £1000, but unfortunately this was on the 3rd hole. Harsh! There is still hope though for Mr. White, as Bradbys Wealth Management are considering a prize for his efforts. Well played Colin. He will also be added to the Hole-In-One honours board at the bottom of the stairs by the office.

Upcoming Events at the West

  • 15th June: Club Championships
  • 16th June: Guest Day
  • 29th June: McGregor Trophy

This summer, West Essex are hosting the prestigious McGregor Trophy. One of the biggest junior competitions in the country. It is a great privilege for our club to be hosting this year, and we need our members to show their support for both our club and the future generations of the sport. England golf expects entries from over 35 countries, with last year’s handicap cut-off being +2 or better. Past winners include our very own Oliver Fisher back in 2004, as well as Rasmus Hojgaard, Edoardo Molinari and Justin Rose!

Please contact Megan@westessexgolfclub.co.uk if you are interested in helping out. The dates are the 15th-18th of July and there are a plethora of jobs that are required for this event to run smoothly.
