Can You Hit the Smallest Championship Green in England?

The 5thhole at West Essex is a short downhill par three where you are trying to land your ball on what is considered to be the smallest green in England. Called the ‘the Frying Pan’ by the members, the old stroke saver book says it is a circular green 18 yards wide but when SkyCaddie turned up, their technology measured it as only being 14 yards wide (about 154 sq yards). The 8thhole at Royal Troon, known as the postage stamp, is only about 10 yards wide but is 30 yards long (around 300 sq yards). So the 5that West Essex is about half the size of the postage stamp.

Spectacular Views of London Landmarks

At several locations there are spectacular views, including the O2 Millennium Dome, the Olympic Stadium & Canary Wharf; the Shard and the Gherkin in the City; the London Eye, the BT Tower and the Wembley Stadium Arch.

This Course Makes You a Better Golfer

The shorter front nine provides a test of accuracy with tree lined fairways meandering through the forest. You will have to play shots above and below your feet, uphill, downhill, over hedges, under branches and between the trees. By contrast, the back nine is flatter, longer, open and forgiving, so you can really let go. All the way round, you are trying to hit small greens, which will hone your approach shots and short game. Finally, you learn to putt on greens built to USGA standards, which are often sloping.

Proof that playing West Essex regularly makes you a better golfer is evidenced by the number of championship winning golfers and teams the course has produced. For example, our juniors were Champions of England and the Home Nations Champions 2011

Extensive Practice Facilities
